A change in scenery can mean a change in plans. As a young college student, I had my eye on avenues other than real estate - but what I didn't know was that I would one day fall head-over-heels in love with Colorado, it's pristine mountains, and it's unique lifestyle. I grew up in Minnesota, spent my university years in State College, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Penn State with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. My first career was in the oil business, which is what originally brought me to Colorado in 1979. I worked for one of the Majors from 1976 to 1990; the last few years were tough ones, as the oil business took a downward turn, and companies sold their holdings and closed their doors. When my company relocated to the south and west, I had two choices: leave the business or leave the State. I chose to stay in my beloved Colorado, and have never regretted the decision.  |  | | | | |
 I started my new mountain life in 1990 and found real estate to be the perfect fit. I brought to the business well-honed computer skills and am not unnerved by constantly changing technology, which is critical in today's dynamic real estate market. When you begin to search for a new home, you will probably encounter several real estate agents at open houses, through friends or from signs or advertisements. Each agent would like a commitment from you to work exclusively with him or her. Is this arrangement in your best interest or is it better to play the field?
There is a universal law that also pertains to real estate agents--you get back from a relationship what you put into it. If you are not convinced that one agent could possibly fill all your needs, you may be overlooking the positive aspects of a one-on-one relationship.
The first step is to find an agent whom you like and trust. Don't be afraid to discuss your reluctance to work with one agent exclusively, but be open to other viewpoints. You may be pleasantly surprised by the open communication that such an admission will establish right from the beginning! Making a commitment to work exclusively with an agent is part of the formula for success in real estate.
The strongest accountability is in the marketplace. A good reputation and referrals from happy clients are essential to a real estate agent's success!
