Town of Breckenridge
Breckenridge, now a year-round destination, was born out of the mining era, the gold rush days. In 1861, Breckenridge boasted only about 75 inhabitants, a few stores, hotels and saloons. By the mid-1870's, the population had boomed and the town was a prominent supply center, surrounded by active mining. With the downturn of the gold rush days, the population of Breckenridge dropped to under 1000 at the turn of the century (1900).
But some 60 years later, with the advent of Breckenridge skiing, a new boom was born in this cozy mountain town. The Breckenridge slopes opened at the Peak 8 Ski Area in December 1961, with four runs and two lifts. Today, the Breckenridge slopes cover a terrain of over 2300 acres, with skiing and boarding available on 4 peaks: Peaks 7,8,9,and 10. The permanent population in the town and surrounding area (known as the Upper Blue) is about 10,000, and half as many dogs. Residents and guests love this area not just for its skiing, but also its boarding, snowshowing, fishing, golfing, hiking, biking, sailing, and a handful of annual celebrations. And its best kept secret? Summer. If you come for the skiing, don't be surprised when you stay for the summer.
